Volcanic vs Limestone vs Clay Soils: Does Tobacco Know the Difference?
Can tobacco distinguish volcanic earth from limestone or heavy clay? Not in the way a smoker distinguishes cocoa from cedar. A tobacco plant does not pull finished flavors directly from the ground. It responds instead to drainage, moisture, oxygen, pH, mineral availability, microbial life, and root resistance. Those responses influence the physical and chemical character of the leaf. Soil matters, but understanding how it matters is far more interesting than repeating simple ideas about terroir.
