We Smoked the Same Cigar at 45-, 60- and 90-Second Puff Intervals
How often should you puff a premium cigar?
Most advice sounds suspiciously precise. One puff per minute. Maybe every 45 seconds. Maybe 90.
There is a better way to answer it.
Take identical cigars and change only the interval between draws.
The Experiment
Use cigars from the same box and divide them into three groups:
- Group A: one puff every 45 seconds
- Group B: one puff every 60 seconds
- Group C: one puff every 90 seconds
Keep the cut, lighter, storage conditions, puff duration and smoking environment as consistent as practical.

Why Puff Interval Matters
A cigar alternates between active puffing and passive smouldering.
Every draw changes airflow through the tobacco and affects the burning zone. Research specifically examining cigars under different smoking intensities found that puff frequency is one of the key variables influencing cigar combustion and smoke yields.
That makes the time between draws more than etiquette.
It is part of the cigar's thermal cycle.
45 Seconds: More Heat, Less Recovery
At a 45-second interval, the next draw arrives relatively quickly.
The ember has less time to cool before oxygen is pulled through the cigar again.
What should we measure?
- Does surface temperature remain higher?

Then Blind the Tasting

One Cigar at Each Interval Is Not Enough
Handmade cigars naturally vary.

More repetitions and more tasters make the comparison more informative.

Any of those outcomes is worth publishing.
What the Test Can Actually Prove
This experiment cannot establish one universal perfect puff cadence for every cigar.
